The case study below reported by the BMPCA chairman, Mick Holloway, illustrates the benefits of being part of an association with a diverse membership.
“Being part of the BMPCA offers the opportunity to discuss potential solutions with colleagues who provide a wide range of products and services.
In this instance Sheffield Forgemasters Engineering Ltd (SFEL) had a contract to supply an ultra large press platen for a German client.
Due to a late drawing change, the component required a radius to be machined at the bottom of a 3 metre deep cylinder bore which proved to be impossible using standard machine shop equipment. At the time this occurred I was travelling through Germany and I contacted my BMPCA colleague Mike Fish, who is Sales Manager for the on-site machining experts Metalock.
Within a very short space of time Metalock’s specialist machining equipment was transported to our Sheffield site. Technical experts employed by Metalock set up the portable equipment and machined the radius in situ. Before meeting Mike I was unaware of Metalock’s capabilities for in situ machining of very large components.
In short, Metalock provided the solution to a difficult problem that we (SFEL) were unable to resolve with our traditional machining techniques. This is just one small example of how networking within the BMPCA really paid off”.
